Aid works. It makes a difference. That’s something I’m starting to get a greater sense of since joining the volunteer team and helping plan the Make Poverty History “Road to 2015” photo exhibitions.

As a uni student studying politics and international studies (with an assignment to write this very week on the question of whether Australia gives enough in its overseas aid budget), it’s been fun and inspiring to get involved in letting our politicians know that I think we need to be doing more.

I’m really looking forward to this Friday night’s exhibition opening at Cosmo Café (6-7.30pm) in the Brunswick Street Mall in Fortitude Valley. I’ll get to meet Federal Member for Brisbane and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance, Teresa Gambaro (and others including ALP Senator Claire Moore) – and let them know that Australia needs to maintain its commitment to reaching 0.5% GNI by 2015.

The photos in the exhibition tell a story of how Australian aid organisations and people in our community are working with our overseas neighbours to improve the quality of life for those living in poverty. So it will be good to have the chance to hear from our local Members of Parliament on the subject and to show them why we’re keen for our aid budget to keep working towards making poverty history.
