The Ripple Effect

At Oxfam Australia we’re really thrilled to learn that the film The Ripple Effect has picked up a major award at the Sport Australia Media Awards.

The film tells the story of the mental health impact of racism on First Peoples in sport. It includes interviews with former St Kilda great Nicky Winmar who famously responded to racist taunts in 1993 by lifting his jumper and proudly pointing to the colour of his skin.

Oxfam helped to get the film going in its early phase by providing some seed funding.

Former Essendon footballer Nathan Lovett-Murray, whose family connections run deep across the traditional lands of Victoria, was the film’s executive producer. He worked with Peter Dickson, of Dickson films, who also accepted the award.

The film’s development was supported by St Kilda Football Club, Dickson Films and VicHealth. The film has now spawned an anti-racism program in Victorian schools known as Point + Be Proud.
