Year 7 and 8 Program

Seeker, Lover, Keeper: how food shapes who you are

The Year 7–8 English program encourages students to increase their awareness of their relationship to the global food system, and to reflect on how their relationship to food contributes to their identity.

The program has been designed for students to engage with the three interrelated English curriculum strands of Literature, Literacy and Language, as outlined in the Australian Curriculum.

Year 9 and 10 Program

Another crack in the wall: the global food system in crisis

The Year 9–10 English program encourages students to gain an understanding of social justice issues that relate to the global food system, and to explore the impact of the current food crisis on people in a variety of contexts.

The program has been designed for students to engage with the three interrelated English curriculum strands of Literature, Literacy and Language, as outlined in the Australian Curriculum.

Geography

Year 9 Program

The Year 9 Geography program has been developed as an inquiry sequence in partnership with the Geography Teachers’ Association of Victoria (GTAV), specifically for Year 9 Geography students to engage with Unit 1: Biomes and food security.

Students gain an understanding of how biomes are altered to grow food, and how climate change and land grabs impact food production. Students explore how food security can be achieved and what they, as global citizens, can do.

The program addresses key geographical knowledge and understanding, geographical inquiry and skills competencies, as outlined in the Australian Curriculum.

General capabilities

The Australian Curriculum identifies a set of general capabilities that allow students to develop the skills, behaviours and attributes to successfully contribute and live in the 21st century.

This education resource provides the opportunity for students to develop several of these general capabilities:

  • critical and creative thinking
  • information and communication technology (ICT) competence
  • ethical behaviour
  • personal and social competence
  • intercultural understanding

 

Cross-curriculum priorities

The cross-curriculum priority of Sustainability is embedded in the resource across all learning programs. The rich and engaging context provided by Sustainability helps students develop knowledge and skills to explore social, cultural, environmental, political and economic systems and their interdependence.

Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia is also a focus in the Geography learning program.
