Supporting labour rights is— fundamentally—about supporting an end to global poverty.
In the words of labour rights activist Piergiorgio Moro, “[o]ne of the most effective actions that could be taken to alleviate poverty for hundreds of millions of people would be the introduction of a living wage in each country, with an associated increase in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) standards.”
The Global Rights at Work Project raises awareness around the importance of decent work conditions in combating poverty. The project focuses on the importance of education and skills building to help secure better working conditions.
These conditions include:
• Access to a living wage
• No forced labour, including child labour
• Safe work conditions
• Freedom from discrimination
• The right to join a union and organise
