Queensland floods aftermath: picking up the pieces

The floods in Queensland are devastating and our thoughts go out to all of those who have been affected.

At Oxfam, we know too well the long-term impact that natural disasters can have on people, families and whole communities.

While the focus of Oxfam’s humanitarian work is on overseas disasters, we have offered stocks such as tarpaulins from our emergency warehouse to help Queensland emergency services assist people with the aftermath of the flood. We have also offered specialist technical expertise, such as logisticians and water and sanitation experts.

Our customer service staff and volunteers are also helping the Australian Red Cross to answer calls in its 24-hour State Enquiry Centre based in Victoria. This centre is responding to calls from evacuees as well as enquiries from the general public about families and friends in flood-affected areas.

Oxfam Emergencies Manager Richard Young says recovery from such a large-scale disaster will take time and will place a significant physical and emotional toll on those affected, including the rescue services.

Rather than setting up our own appeal, Oxfam is asking those who want to help to please donate to  the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal, which has been set up by the Queensland Government.

Find out more about the floods, or make a donation.

You can also watch Richard Young being interviewed by Fairfax Media about the types of challenges faced in emergency responses such as the Queensland floods.
