If it’s broke, let’s fix it

With World Food Day (October 16) fast approaching a number of Oxfam supporters are preparing their Eat Local Feed Global activities. Eat Local Feed Global is held from the 12th to the 20th of October to increase awareness about injustices in the global food system and raise money for Oxfam’s life changing work. Register to take part now.

By Agustina Gorini, Oxfam Volunteer

The idea of living in a world where there is enough food to feed everyone and yet 1 in 8 people go to bed hungry, makes me feel very uncomfortable. The fact that there is food being wasted around the world whilst people are going hungry highlights the nature of our broken food system.

You know the saying: “if ain’t broke, don’t fix it”? Well our food system is broken, so let’s fix it!

There are many ways you can make a difference. As World Food Day (October 16) approaches, one thing I’m doing is taking part in Eat Local Feed Global by hosting  a picnic in the park with my fantastic friends to help raise awareness and some money for Oxfam and do our bit to reduce global hunger. I’m asking each person to bring a sustainable dish using the GROW challenges as inspiration.

I am looking forward to see what people will bring. Some people might bring a dish sourced from local and seasonal produce. Others might bring some fair-trade chocolate. For me, I’ll bring a dish using some veggies from my garden at home.

Together we will lean new ways to fix our broken food system and by providing a small donation we will be able to raise money for Oxfam’s life changing work empowering small scale farmers.

Taking part in Eat Local Feed Global is easy and fun. All you need to do is share some food with friends in the week (October 12 – 20) around World Food Day, raise some money and awareness about the role we can all play in tackling hunger.

I am ready to help tackle hunger and poverty! What about you? Will you join Eat Local Feed Global?
