Hobart Makes Poverty History

Oxfam Australia facilitated a great workshop in sunny (yes, sunny) Hobart last week. We had a great turnout, with over 50 people coming along to learn the ins and outs of campaigning – from media messaging, building alliances and managing volunteers to formulating and directing campaign actions.

The workshop has also inspired people to organise some Make Poverty History electoral forums in the federal seats of Dennison and Bass for August – more details soon!

This was a precursor to the launch of the Live below the Line campaign where people are being asked to live on less than 2 dollars a day to raise awareness around global poverty.

Internationally, the Extreme Poverty Line is defined as US$1.25 a day – the equivalent of $2 in Australia. 1.4 billion people in our world currently live below this line – lacking the basic choices and opportunities that most Australians take for granted.

This August, The Global Poverty Project and The Oaktree Foundation are inviting Australians to feed themselves with just $2 a day – to better understand the obstacles inherent in extreme poverty – and to raise money for life-changing education programs.
