Typhoon Haiyan
Thanks to an overwhelming response to our Typhoon Haiyan Emergency Appeal, Oxfam’s humanitarian aid response in the Philippines is fully funded to meet the immediate needs of the Typhoon survivors and can begin addressing longer term recovery and reconstruction.

Typhoon Haiyan hit the coastal communities of The Philippines. More than 6,300 people lost their lives, and almost 4.1 million people were forced from their homes.
Like most disasters, Typhoon Haiyan hit the poorest and most vulnerable people the hardest.
Oxfam’s response
Oxfam deployed an emergency team within three days of the typhoon making landfall. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, our focus was on preventing the spread of disease by providing clean water, toilets and hygiene essentials. Thanks to the generous support of people like you, over the last 12 months Oxfam has assisted 868,960 people in the worst affected areas of Leyte, Cebu and Samar by providing clean water, sanitation, shelter and assistance to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
Clean Water and Sanitation
With more than 437,00 individuals already reached with life-saving water; sanitation and hygiene support, Oxfam and its partners continue to work with Haiyan affected communities by planning and working towards sustainable solutions to water, sanitation and solid waste management needs.
Livelihood Assistance
We’re working with communities to help recover their livelihoods and businesses. We’re supporting fishing communities to access the sea and working with communities to clear land; so that farmers and fisherman alike can earn an income. We’re also supporting local women’s organisations to help promote rural women’s resilience and to ensure women are adequately represented and heard in rehabilitation efforts. To date, Oxfam has reached more than 100,000 families with livelihood assistance.
Shelter
Oxfam teams addressed the immediate shelter needs of affected communities by providing essential items such as mosquito nets and tarpaulins and assisted families facing relocation. To date, Oxfam has reached 4,690 families in Tacloban City and Tanauan.
