We have just heard that after months of promises, Woolworths have finally listened to you and signed the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord. This means that soon, safety teams will be inspecting all of Woolworths’ (Big W) supplier factories in Bangladesh for building and fire safety.
The news that Woolworths has finally signed the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord comes as we learn that 2 million workers in Bangaldesh are now covered by the accord.
Congratulations and thank you to the thousands of people who took part in this campaign. Since the Rana Plaza building collapse in April Australians have responded tremendously to the call for action for retailers to sign up to higher safety standards. Together we have had great success in getting some of Australia’s largest clothing retailers (Kmart, Cotton On, Katies, Target, Forever New) to sign up to the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord. Almost six thousand people signed the petitions calling on companies to sign the accord with countless people emailing and calling the companies or leaving messages on their Facebook page. Thanks to you the 2 million Bangladesh workers who will be covered by the Accord will be safer when they go to work.
This isn’t the end of the campaign. There are still a number of Australian companies that haven’t signed including Bonds, Jay Jays and Best and Less.
