OUR WORK IN SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka’s 30-year civil war ended in 2009, but the consequences are still felt across the country today. Ongoing debate around leadership and constitutional reform are impeding economic recovery and growth. Rural areas experience particularly high levels of poverty and inequality, with very slow uptake of modern farming technology. A range of barriers and inequalities, such as unpaid care work, also keep women from participating in rural economies.

Oxfam has been working in Sri Lanka for over three decades, consistently delivering humanitarian and development programs. We are currently working to develop inclusive, sustainable markets and increase women’s economic participation and leadership.

Resilient and Gender Inclusive Enterprise Systems (RIES) in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector faces several challenges, like poor access to reliable market information for farmers and inefficient supply chains. Oxfam is supporting hundreds of small businesses and commercial farmers to develop businesses selling agricultural products – like fruits, vegetables, hand looms and spices – so they can increase their income and drive regional economic growth. Men are engaged in relieving the burden of unpaid care work on women, so they can participate in these economic opportunities.

This project is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program.

Enhancing Gender Inclusive Socio-Economic Development (GISED)

Many rural farmers in Sri Lanka do not have the opportunity or knowledge to earn a profit from selling their produce in markets. This project is improving dairy, potato seeds, cinnamon, and cocoa value chains, which have the most significant potential to increase and diversify farmers’ income. Producers and entrepreneurs in Central and Uva provinces are also improving their farming and business skills to increase their productivity, profitability, and access to markets.
