On Friday 7th June, Kmart and Target agreed to sign on to the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord. They are joining more than 40 companies internationally who have joined this important Accord so far.
Last month, more than a thousand garment workers died when the Rana Plaza building collapsed in Dhaka. As part of this Bangladesh Accord, all Kmart and Target supplier factories in Bangladesh will now be independently inspected for building and fire safety.
Under the Accord, workers will have access to health and safety training, and importantly, workers will be able to refuse dangerous work without facing repercussions. Now is the time for Cotton On, Big W and other Australian companies sourcing from Bangladesh to immediately join the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord.
We are also calling on all Australian companies to publish the names and addresses of their supplier factories in Bangladesh to allow for independent verification of worker conditions.
