What it’s all about

What it’s all about

We offer a huge range of ideas, resources and support for integrating global learning and to enable teachers, students and the whole school community to understand their world and make a positive difference in it.

OUR VISION

Young people have extraordinary potential to create big positive changes in the world we live in. Powered by empathy and understanding, their actions are essential to creating a just world without poverty. They are the leaders of today and tomorrow, who are taught, inspired and empowered by dedicated, passionate and engaged educators.

As an international aid, development and campaigning organisation, Oxfam is uniquely placed to offer support to educators and students to reach this amazing potential.

“All young Australians become successful learnings, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens.”
Melbourne Declaration, Goal #2

OUR PURPOSE

Oxfam Australia’s Schools Program recognises we live in a globalised and digitally-connected world.

Offering a wide range of ideas, education resources and support, we help:

Supporting active global citizenship education, we create opportunities for students to explore global perspectives, social justice and active citizenship in ways that are relevant and meaningful to them.

Students are supported to build their confidence and capacity to make ethical, sustainable and informed choices to help shape solutions to global problems at a local, national or global level.

OUR PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH

Our subject-specific, curriculum-linked resources are developed in accordance with the ‘Learn, Think, Act’ global citizenship education model:

Learn

Exploring the issue, considering it from different viewpoints and trying to understand causes and consequences.

Think

Considering critically what can be done about the issue, and relating this to values and worldviews and trying to understand the nature of power and action.

Act

Thinking about and taking action on the issue as an active global citizen, both individually and collectively.

Our resources are produced in consultation with teacher associations, teachers and students to ensure they are relevant, captivating and in line with current trends in pedagogy, popular youth culture and digital technologies. They support inquiry-based learning, as well as both traditional and ‘flipped classroom’ teaching models.

All resources are aligned to the Australian Curriculum or the relevant state senior secondary school certificate.

Resources can be used across a range of subjects including English, Geography, Society and Environment, Health, Economics, Business, Global Politics, Visual Arts, Food Technology and more.

Oxfam Australia’s range of education resources can be used:

  • In the classroom
  • By Student Leadership Teams, Social Justice Groups, Service Learning Groups and Student Representative Councils
  • To support extra-curricular school activities, such as fundraising days
  • When engaging with the wider school community

Oxfam supports Safe Schools:

Oxfam Australia believes that schools should provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students, so that they can learn, grow, and reach their full potential as individuals, and as active global citizens. We are proud to stand in solidarity with, and state our support for, Safe Schools Coalition Australia and its work to create positive change for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, school staff and families, as an ally in working towards a world that is more just, peaceful, harmonious and fair.
